What Is a Flask Used for

Different types of hip flasks are used for different purposes. The most commonly known flask is the “hip” (drinking) flask, used to store and transport small amounts of liquid refreshment.
History
Flasks, said to be of Norwegian origin, have been around since the 18th century. They’re mainly used to discreetly carry alcoholic drinks and/or water for long cross-country trips. Many of these ancient flasks were made of glass or leather. Glass flasks are made of limestone, soda ash, quartz and/or sand and come in different colors, mostly amber, blue, green, or clear.
Function
Stainless steel or “men’s” (hip) flasks are highly durable, and many can be engraved. Modern glass flasks are more likely to be used for science classes and experiments. Disposable stainless steel hip flasks are the least expensive types and are typically used at outdoor sporting events. Fitness flasks are designed for runners and hikers and come with Velcro fasteners on a belt that fits around the waist.
Fun Fact
Masonic (pocket) flasks, made in America during the early 1800s, were used at tavern gatherings for the Masons. These gatherings were an early version of BYOB – a bring-your-own-bottle type of get-together.

The members carried their own spirits (liquor) in their “hip pockets,” thus the name “hip” flask.
